San Diego Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove will be sidelined for the start of the best-of-five National League Division Series (NLDS).

The Padres announced on Friday, one day before Game 1 of the NLDS, that Musgrove will undergo right elbow ligament reconstruction surgery and will be removed from the postseason roster.

Musgrove is expected to rehabilitate for 12 to 18 months after the surgery, which will keep him out until 2025.

San Diego, which will start Dylan Sease and Darvish Yu in Games 1 and 2 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, will fill Musgrove's void with left-hander Martin Perez.

Musgrove, who started Game 2 of San Diego's World Series against the Dodgers at Gocheok SkyDome in Seoul in March, has been on the disabled list twice this season with elbow soreness.

After returning in August to help the Padres reach the postseason, Musgrove was pulled from Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against the Atlanta Braves on March 3 after lasting less than four innings.

His elbow ligaments were already strained, and a series of slow curveballs prompted catcher Kyle Higashioka to signal to the dugout, leading to a pitching change.
